Custom windows are measured, engineered, cut, assembled, and sealed to fit one specific opening in your Royal Palm Beach home.

Custom windows are built to the exact rough opening of your house, not mass-produced to a standard size. The process runs from a precise field measurement through frame fabrication, glass selection and cutting, IGU assembly, glazing, and final sealing, then ends with an installation that has to survive Palm Beach County’s wind-borne debris requirements. At TruePane Windows & Doors, we’ve been building and setting custom windows in Royal Palm Beach since 2008, and the difference between a window made for your opening and one forced into it shows up within the first two summers. If you want to talk specifics for your house, call (386) 251-6745 and we’ll walk you through the whole process.

Why Royal Palm Beach houses rarely fit stock windows

Royal Palm Beach grew as a platted planned community between roughly 1970 and the mid-1990s. Thousands of the original homes are concrete block and stucco ranch-style builds with single-pane aluminum sliders and jalousie windows still in place. Those jalousie openings in particular are non-standard widths, often cut to fit a specific Florida room or screen enclosure from the 1970s or early 1980s. When homeowners start pricing impact upgrades, they discover that a stock window from a big-box aisle is either too narrow, too short, or too flimsy for the opening, and they find themselves in custom window territory whether they planned on it or not.

In the older subdivisions built before 1985, we regularly encounter jalousie rough openings that are three to four inches off from any production window size. That means a custom unit with a frame extension or full framing modification before the impact window can be set. It is one of the most common costs homeowners did not see coming when they got their first quote elsewhere, and it is one of the first things we measure when we walk the job.

The planning matters because Royal Palm Beach sits squarely inside Palm Beach County’s Wind-Borne Debris Region. Hurricanes Frances and Jeanne hit back-to-back in the summer and fall of 2004, and that experience still anchors most replacement conversations we have today. A custom window is only as good as the opening it is sealed into. Dale Kessler grew up off Crestwood Boulevard and has spent decades measuring, setting, and sealing windows across Palm Beach County. He learned the trade at Palm Beach State College, where the building construction program covered glazing, framing tolerances, and Florida building code, and he still references those tolerances by habit on every measure.

If you are looking at impact windows or full replacements down the line, start with our Custom Windows & Doors in Royal Palm Beach page to see how we handle the whole job.

Step by step: how a custom window actually gets made

Here is the straight sequence from a bare opening to a finished window, the way we do it at TruePane. No shortcuts, no substitutions.

1. Measure the rough opening, not the old window

The old aluminum slider or jalousie frame lies. It has shifted, warped, or been shimmed by a previous installer. We measure the rough opening in three places for width and three for height, then check the diagonals for square. A quarter-inch out of square on an impact window changes how the frame bears load and how the seal closes.

2. Choose frame material and glass package

For Royal Palm Beach, we typically quote aluminum or vinyl frames with impact-rated laminated glass. The frame material dictates the structural rating, and the glass package dictates the energy performance and the impact rating. We quote manufacturer lines side by side on paper so you can see exactly what you’re buying. That means an Andersen quote next to a PGT quote next to a CGI quote, with the actual glass thickness, the low-E coating, the gas fill, and the design pressure rating listed. No verbal hand-waving.

3. Fabricate the frame to the opening

The manufacturer cuts the frame extrusions to your rough opening dimensions, allowing for the specified shim gap, and then welds or mechanically joins the corners. For impact windows, the frame itself carries part of the wind load, so the corner joinery and the mullion design have to match the engineering for the opening.

4. Build the insulating glass unit, or IGU

Two panes of glass are cut, cleaned, and spaced with a warm-edge spacer bar that holds desiccant to absorb moisture. The unit is sealed with a primary seal and a secondary structural seal. In Royal Palm Beach’s daily summer convective storms, a poorly sealed IGU fogs within a season or two. The inland heat and humidity are less about salt air and more about relentless UV and thermal cycling on vinyl seals and door weatherstripping.

5. Glaze and seal the unit into the frame

The IGU is set into the frame with glazing tape or wet glazing, then mechanically capped. This is the step that separates a window that stays clear from one that leaks at the corners. We register both manufacturer warranty layers in writing before the truck leaves the driveway, with durations stated and no fine print that covers neither.

6. Install and seal the whole assembly into your opening

Flashing, sill gasket, perimeter sealant, and a final check for plumb and level. Dale keeps the rule on the whiteboard in the shop: if the pane is not true, the job is not done.

Most jobs are completed in a single visit, and the workmanship is backed by our Done Right Promise. If something is not right, we make it right, no paperwork fights.

How much do custom windows cost in Royal Palm Beach?

The honest answer is that the window itself is usually the smaller line item. The larger costs come from what your existing opening requires before the window can go in. Here is what we see in Royal Palm Beach, based on the homes in the planned subdivisions built from the 1970s through the mid-1990s:

Line item Typical range
Custom impact-rated window, single opening $900 to $2,200 per unit
Jalousie opening framing modification $350 to $900 per opening
Full frame replacement versus insert install Add $250 to $600 per opening
HOA architectural review package prep Usually included with us; some contractors charge $150 to $400
Design pressure upgrade for west-facing windows Add 15% to 30% to the glass package

These are planning numbers, not a quote. Every home in Royal Palm Beach sits under an HOA with architectural review, and every impact window or door replacement needs both a county building permit and HOA approval. We measure every opening twice and put the numbers on paper for you before you sign anything. PGT and CGI units are our most common impact lines for these ranch homes because their frame profiles adapt well to the rough openings we find in the older subdivisions, including the enclosed Florida rooms with jalousie windows that are now banned under current code.

What most homeowners don’t see until it’s too late

The question is not really how custom windows are made. It is what happens when a custom window is made wrong and then set anyway.

Here is what Dale has seen repeatedly in Royal Palm Beach, from homeowners who tried the cheapest route first:

  • An impact window set into an out-of-square jalousie opening with a half-inch shim stack, then sealed with caulk over the gap. It passes the visual walkthrough, then fails the first mandatory inspection.
  • A vinyl frame ordered without the design pressure rating matching the opening’s wind zone. The glass holds, the frame deflects, the corner seal tears, and the window leaks inside the wall.
  • A low-E double pane with no gas fill specified, sold as “energy efficient” in a west-facing wall that bakes in the afternoon heat index from May through October. The homeowner overpays for a comfort problem that never gets solved.
  • A manufacturer warranty that gets voided because the installer never registered the second warranty layer with the manufacturer. The homeowner calls the window company, the window company points at the installer, and everyone disappears.

If it is not sealed right, the next storm will tell you. We set every custom window with a background-checked, uniformed crew that treats your home like it belongs to a family we’ll pass at the Commons Park on Saturday. We register both manufacturer warranty layers in writing and stand behind the job for 90 days. If the pane is not true, the job is not done.

BBill T.

"Whole-house window replacement at 71 years old is not something you want to do twice. Dale walked the house himself for the quote. Crew was the same three men all four days, and the foreman knew every window by room."

PPat and Ray L.
★★★★★

"French doors to the patio, custom size because this house was built in 1961 and nothing is standard. Measured twice, three weeks to fabricate like they warned, and the install day they laid runners over my floors without being asked."

MMarie S.
★★★★★

"A casement crank had stripped and the sash was swollen shut. The technician, Ray, fixed the crank on the spot and only then talked about replacement for the three windows that were genuinely done. That is why the whole street uses them now."

EEleanor G.
★★★★★

"Eleven windows replaced in two days. The crew chief, Marcus, showed me the level on every single frame before they caulked it. My wife noticed the street noise was gone before I did."

RRonald P.

"Quote was the price, which after three other bids that grew legs was worth something. Double-hungs went in clean, they hauled the old ones, and the registration paperwork for the warranty came in the mail like they said."

DDorothy K.
★★★★★

"Our bay window had rotted at the sill and two other outfits wanted to talk us into a flat picture window instead. TruePane rebuilt the opening and matched the original look. Neighbors have knocked on the door about it."
